2 days Jongunjoki - Wilderness paddling from Aittokoski to Viitakoski

Paddling pleasure with an adventurous flair: through quiet forests, clear currents and rapids - ideal for nature lovers with a thirst for discovery.

Escape everyday life and head into the wilderness: For two days, you follow the flow of the Jongunjoki – a peaceful yet varied river with small rapids, green riverbanks and rustic campfire spots. Nature sets the pace: sometimes you simply drift along, while gentle rapids occasionally require your full attention. In the evening, the campfire crackles in the middle of the Finnish wilderness.
A special challenge awaits at the Kaksinkantaja rapid: Experienced paddlers may choose to run the rapid, while others can safely carry the canoe along the shore. This keeps the tour relaxed and safe even for less experienced participants.
A wilderness adventure with a true sense of exploration – perfect for experiencing Finland’s nature from the water.

What to expect:

  • Gentle wilderness with adventure flair: the Jongunjoki meanders through untouched forests and moors – quiet, idyllic and yet exciting. Small rapids, tight bends and natural obstacles provide variety without being too challenging.

  • Camping in the open air: we spend the night in a laavu or in a tent – with a campfire, cooking utensils and bright summer nights. Very simple, very close to nature.

  • Kaksinkantaja: The challenge: you can decide for yourself at this rapid: Ambitious paddlers master it in a boat – everyone else carries over safely.

  • Perfect for beginners with a thirst for adventure: no whitewater experience, but also no boring lake district – ideal for anyone who wants to spend the night outdoors for the first time or gain some paddling experience in the current.

Detailed program

Day 1: Embarking on an adventure – from Aittokoski into the wilderness

In the morning we drive together from Eräkeskus to the starting point of the tour on the Jongunjoki River, more precisely to the Aittokoski Bridge. After a short briefing on paddling and safety rules, we start our 16 km downstream trip.

Today’s stage leads through a varied landscape with calmly flowing water, narrow river bends and the first small rapids. There is plenty to discover – birds, traces of beavers and, with a bit of luck, wild animals on the banks.

In the afternoon, we set up camp in a beautiful spot right by the river. We prepare dinner together, collect firewood and enjoy the tranquillity of the wilderness around the campfire in the open air. We spend the night in the laavu or in a tent.

Day 2: Pure nature & rapids – to Viitakoski

After breakfast and dismantling the camp, we continue downstream towards Viitakoski. The stretch of about 15 km remains wild and romantic and offers new scenic impressions. Again and again we paddle through calm passages, followed by small, easy rapids.

The Kaksinkantaja rapids are the highlight of the day: those who want to can paddle them in a boat (previous experience and courage required) – everyone else will be carried around safely. Today, too, we set our own pace and take plenty of breaks.

In the afternoon we reach the exit at Viitakoski, where we are picked up. Alternatively, if desired and at a slower pace, an earlier exit is also possible en route.
