What should I wear and what do I need for a stay at Eräkeskus in autumn/early winter?

Autumn and early winter in Finland can vary greatly – from late-summer warmth to wintry cold. We therefore recommend checking the current weather forecast for our region before packing. To help you prepare well for the conditions, here are our tips:

Recommended Clothing:

We recommend the tried-and-tested layering principle, where several layers are worn on top of each other so you can easily adapt to changing temperatures:

  1. Base Layer (You bring this with you): Functional underwear made from synthetic fibres or merino wool effectively wicks moisture away from the body. Important: Cotton and pure wool retain moisture and are only comfortable when dry. Add wool, thermal or fleece socks – ideally two pairs worn on top of each other for extra warmth.
  2. Mid Layer (You bring this with you): Lightweight fleece clothing, such as a pullover and long underwear, provides additional insulation.
  3. Insulating Layer (You bring this with you): Depending on your needs and the temperature, a thicker pullover or fleece jacket, and possibly a second pair of fleece trousers, provide additional protection against the cold.
  4. Outer Layer (You bring this with you): A windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers, or a lined overall with a hood. The hood should be large enough to pull over a hat in windy and cold conditions.

Equipment you should bring with you:

  • Water- and dirt-resistant footwear, such as hiking boots or rubber boots, to protect you on wet or muddy ground.
  • Weatherproof clothing.
  • Insulated bottle (thermos flask).
  • Headlamp or flashlight with spare batteries.
  • Thin gloves, e.g. work gloves from a hardware store.
  • Dicke Handschuhe für kalte Tage, um die Hände bei niedrigen Temperaturen warm zu halten.
  • Thick gloves for cold days, to keep your hands warm in low temperatures.
  • Tracksuit for the overnight stay in the cabin.
  • Slippers or non-slip socks for the lodge and cabins.
  • Small daypack for overnight stays in cabins and day tours.
  • Optional: a multitool.

What we provide:

  • As soon as the first snow falls and temperatures become wintry, we provide the 4th layer (a lined overall) as well as winter boots.

  • Sleeping bag and liner for overnight stays in cabins.

We also have a limited number of hats and gloves available to borrow.

With the right clothing and equipment, you will be well prepared to fully enjoy nature and our activities!
