Winter Hike in Koli National Park & to the Icefalls

Experience the winter beauty of the Koli National Park and impressive icefalls in a single day. After traveling together, we’ll reach the snow-covered heights of Koli, where a breathtaking view of the frozen Pielinen .

On a leisurely winter hike , we ’ll enjoy the tranquility of nature and then refuel with a warm lunch by the fire.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the fascinating icefalls —frozen works of natural art that make this landscape truly special.

If conditions permit, part of the route will take us along the ice road —a unique experience on the frozen lake (not guaranteed).

What to expect:

  • Group Trip to Koli:
    We’ll meet up here in the Lieksa region and set off together for the Koli National Park.
  • Breathtaking Views: After a short climb, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view over the frozen Pielinen —one of Finland’s most beautiful viewpoints.
  • A Relaxing Winter Hike: Together , we’ll explore the snow-covered landscape on easy-to-walk trails and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
  • Lunch by the Fire: Along the way , we’ll settle in by a fire pit and enjoy a warm lunch surrounded by the winter landscape.
  • Visiting the Ice Falls: In the afternoon, we’ll explore impressive frozen ice falls—unique natural formations that create a very special atmosphere in winter.
  • Ride along the ice road (optional): If conditions permit, part of the route will take us along the ice road on the frozen lake (not guaranteed).

  • Duration: About 6–7 hours (including lunch).
  • Location: Eräkeskus , at the lodge.
  • Group size: Small, intimate groups for an immersive experience.
  • Guide: German, English, Finnish speaking guide.
  • Dates: December 1 through April 12.

  • Professional tour guidance provided by guides.
  • Transfer to Koli National Park and the icefalls.
  • Guided winter hike in the national park.
  • Lunch over an open fire.
  • Required equipment: Snowshoes or crampons, depending on weather and snow conditions.
  • Overalls and winter boots will be provided as needed. Available sizes for overalls range from XXS to XXL, and for boots from size 36 to 47 (please specify your needs and sizes when making a request).
  • Breathtaking views, special moments in nature, and plenty of fresh winter air!

  • We recommend that you take out cancellation insurance.

Important Note:

This tour takes place in the great outdoors and is subject to current weather and snow conditions. The safety of our guests is our top priority. If conditions are unsuitable, we reserve the right to adjust the route or itinerary on short notice.

Depending on ice and weather conditions, the ice road may be part of the tour, but this is not guaranteed.

Warm, windproof clothing and sturdy, winter-ready footwear are absolutely essential for this experience.

Here’s what you should pack:

    • A thermos for your own hot drinks.
    • Warm winter clothing in a layered look (ski underwear, fleece, thick socks).
    • Wind- and water-repellent outer layer (unless you’re renting a jumpsuit from us).
    • A warm hat that covers the ears well.
    • Lightweight fleece fingerless gloves: It’s best to have two pairs,
      so you can change them if needed.
    • Large, waterproof and windproof overgloves (mittens):
      Offer the best protection against cold and wet conditions.
    • Warm, sturdy winter boots (if you’re not renting a pair from us).
    • Scarf or tube scarf.
    • Sunglasses and sunscreen (even the winter sun can be intense!).
    • You might want to bring a small daypack for your personal items
    • And, of course: a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude!
  • Cancellations must be made in writing (by e-mail to office@eraekeskus.com). In the case of declarations received on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the next working day shall be decisive.
  • Cancellation up to 7 days before the start of the tour is free of charge.
  • If you cancel 7 days or less before the date of the event, we will charge a cancellation fee of 100% of the booking price.

We will check your request immediately and get back to you as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours) with all the details!Advance reservations for day activities – ideally a few days in advance – are essential. Unfortunately, we cannot always fulfill spontaneous requests directly on site.
