Experience the unspoiled beauty of the Änäkäinen Nature Reserve, near the Russian border! After a short transfer, your winter adventure begins. Feel the gentle movement of the snowshoes beneath your feet as we explore the picturesque lakes together explore the areas nestled within a fascinating, ancient moraine landscape dotted with bogs and marshes.

Let yourself be enchanted by gnarled pine trees, and with a little luck , discover traces of the past— perhaps we’ll find evidence of forest fires, clear-cutting, or even relics from the Winter War. Keep your eyes peeled for the shy inhabitants of this wilderness: a fox, a wolf, a lynx, or even a wolverine might cross our path!

What to expect:

  • A Warm Welcome: We welcome you to our husky farm here in the Lieksa region. After packing your gear, we’ll take you to Änäkäinen on a short ride.
  • An active way to experience winter nature: Enjoy the gentle motion of snowshoeing and discover the unique beauty of the Finnish wilderness in a special way.
  • A unique hiking experience in the company of our dogs: Enjoy the winter silence as some of our lovable dogs join us on the hike and add an extra touch of joy. Look forward to their cheerful company—and maybe a pat or two for our four-legged friends!
  • A soothing treat by the warm fire: Surrounded by winter’s splendor, we enjoy a delicious lunch by the crackling campfire or in the cozy warmth of a traditional kota.
  • Professional guidance from a local guide: Rely on our guide’s experience to show you the most beautiful spots and ensure your safety.

  • Duration: About 3–4 hours (including lunch).
  • Location: Eräkeskus , at the lodge.
  • Group size: Small, intimate groups for an immersive experience, max. 6 participants.
  • Guide: German, English, Finnish speaking guide.
  • Dates: December 1 through April 12.

  • Overalls and winter boots will be provided as needed. Available sizes for overalls range from XXS to XXL, and for boots from size 36 to 47 (please specify your needs and sizes when making a request).
  • Unforgettable moments and plenty of fresh air!

  • We recommend that you take out cancellation insurance.

Physical Fitness: A moderate level of basic fitness is sufficient to enjoy this snowshoe hike. You should enjoy being active outdoors. Please let us know about any health limitations when you make your inquiry.

Important Note Regarding Children’s Participation: Please note that we are currently unable to offer snowshoes in children’s sizes. Participation in the snowshoe hike is therefore recommended for children who already have a shoe size that fits adult or youth snowshoes.

Here’s what you should pack:

    • A thermos for your own hot drinks.
    • Warm winter clothing in a layered look (ski underwear, fleece, thick socks).
    • Wind- and water-repellent outer layer (unless you’re renting a jumpsuit from us).
    • A warm hat that covers the ears well.
    • Lightweight fleece liner gloves: Ideally two pairs, so you can change them if needed.
    • Large waterproof and windproof overmittens: They provide the best protection against cold and moisture.
    • Warm, sturdy winter boots (if you’re not renting a pair from us).
    • Scarf or tube scarf.
    • Sunglasses and sunscreen (even the winter sun can be intense!).
    • You might want to bring a small daypack for your personal items
    • And, of course: a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude!
  • Cancellations must be made in writing (by e-mail to office@eraekeskus.com). In the case of declarations received on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the next working day shall be decisive.
  • Cancellation up to 7 days before the start of the tour is free of charge.
  • If you cancel 7 days or less before the date of the event, we will charge a cancellation fee of 100% of the booking price.

Since we plan each tour individually and tailor it to current conditions, we ask that you submit an inquiry. This way, we can guarantee you the best possible experience! We’ll review your inquiry right away and get back to you as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours) with all the details! Advance reservations for daily activities—ideally a few days in advance—are required. Unfortunately, we can’t always accommodate last-minute requests made on the spot.
