Detailed program
Day 1: Arrival and welcome
You’ll travel to Eräkeskus on your own and check into your cozy room with a private bathroom. In the evening, a hearty dinner awaits you—a relaxing start to your week of adventure in North Karelia.
Alternatively, a transfer can be arranged for an additional fee.
Day 2 – Kicking Off on the Karhunpolku Trail
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll pack your backpack. We’ll take you to the northern starting point of the legendary Karhunpolku hiking trail. You’ll hike at a leisurely pace through unspoiled nature, and you decide for yourself when to take breaks. Along the way, several fire pits and huts invite you to linger. Your destination for the day is the small Valama cabin (about 15 km), where you’ll spend the night. In the evening, you’ll cook your meal over an open fire by the river—and maybe take the opportunity for a refreshing swim.
Day 3 – Pure Nature on the Hiking Trail
After breakfast, you’ll pack up your things and set out to explore the Karhunpolku trail further south. The landscape is characterized by deep forests and unspoiled nature —the perfect backdrop for your solo hike.
You’ll hike about 12 kilometers to the impressive suspension bridge over the Pälvekoski rapids. At the suspension bridge, our team will be waiting to warmly welcome you and take you back to Eräkeskus. There, you can recharge with a cozy dinner at the lodge and wind down the day in a relaxed atmosphere.
Day 4 – A free day to enjoy
Today, take it easy—this day is all yours. After breakfast, you’re free to spend the day however you like.
There are various activities available to you: Grab a bike and explore the peaceful trails around Eräkeskus, or paddle across the clear lake in a rowboat or on a SUP —we’ll provide the equipment free of charge.
If you’re in the mood for some animal companionship, you can also take one of our friendly dogs for a walk. They love a change of pace, and you’ll have the chance to explore the area in relaxed company.
For lunch, pack yourself a delicious packed lunch that you can enjoy outdoors at a beautiful spot along the way. In the evening, a homemade meal awaits you at the lodge.
Days 5–7 – Three-Day Wilderness Canoe Trip
After breakfast, you’ll set off on your next adventure: a three-day canoe trip through the quiet, expansive waterways of North Karelia. Together, we’ll pack your gear and provisions into waterproof barrels and bags before you set out directly from the dock at Eräkeskus . From here, you’ll paddle on your own along the Jongunjoki and Lieksanjoki rivers and across Lake Pankajärvi.
You decide for yourself how far you want to paddle, where you’ll take breaks, and where you’ll spend the night—whether at a secluded campfire site, in a laavu, or simply in your tent on the shore. The waters are calm, and the landscape alternates between narrow, forest-lined stretches of river and wide lakes dotted with small islands. Along the way, you’ll prepare your own meals—over a campfire or on a gas stove, depending on the weather and your mood.
On the third day of your tour, we’ll pick you up again at a previously agreed-upon location. Once back at Eräkeskus, you’ll return your gear and wrap up the canoeing trip with a final dinner together at the lodge.
Day 8: Farewell & journey home
Your stay with us ends after breakfast. Depending on what we’ve agreed upon, we’ll arrange transportation to your departure point, or you can begin your journey home in your own vehicle. We’ll say goodbye with our best wishes and hope that your time with us has left you with many unforgettable memories .
